Like the book it was based on, this miniseries focuses on two very different families in the picture perfect town of Shaker Heights. The Richardsons are rich and white, and the Warrens are low income, a single mother, and (unlike the book) Black. The series also has an added storyline of one of the characters struggling with her sexuality and getting acceptance from her family and community. Much of the story is the same, including the high tension custody case of a Chinese baby, however, the show has a different depth now that there is a new lens of race introduced. The show is also very well done technically with an especially good soundtrack.
