This show is based off of the book series The Mortal Instruments. In this show there are shadowhunters (those who hunt demons) and downworlders (those who have demon blood, including vampires, werewolves, warlocks, etc.). The shadowhunters look down on downworlders because they’re part-demon. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for racism, but the show itself barely talks about race and the cast is majority white. There is a lead who is Chinese and two recurring characters who are Black. There is gay, lesbian, and asexual representation. One of the main characters is Jewish but religion plays a very minor part in the show. Mental health comes up a lot in the show, but mental illnesses aren’t talked about at all.
